No, sorry. I still cannot reproduce a crash.

To be sure, that's what I did:
- created a title clip, clicked on "Add picture..." in the tool bar and 
selected a PNG image (no other changes)
- I then added this title clip to track "Video 1", and put a .mov video on 
track "Video 2"
- Then I rendered the project to MPEG4/AAC as before.

Rendered fine, no crash. And the resulting video is playable.
(I also tried putting the image directly onto the "Video 1" track first, 
because I missed the part about "title clip"... ;) )

But according to your description, the title clip definitely sounds like the 
trigger.
Does it work when you don't add a picture to the title clip (i.e. only text 
f.e.)?
Is it crashing with specific pictures or with all? Maybe also try a different 
format than PNG.

You might want to consider filing a bug report:

The developers should know best how to investigate this further.
