i couldn't reproduce that, on all my boxes vlc works fine after every
"zypper dup".

Someone told me, he could fix that with installing (lib)ffmpeg
0.5-1.pm.X, start vlc, and then install (lib)ffmpeg
0.5.20024svn-20090925 again.
