Hello packman team
Since around 2006 I've been considering packman aka "codecs" as
something inseparable from openSUSE. The news about potential shutdown
made me think of 1) am I ready to take this responsibility and 2) what
if it's just shutdown and that's it.
The infra you guys maintain costs money and effort to keep it running,
based on description in that original message few months ago. Meanwhile,
I work on adjacent project (1) where one of the core ideas is "build
package on Github actions, host repos on S3"
And here's that idea for packman essentials repo:
https://packman.omnipackage.org. It's mostly vibe-coded proof-of-concept
of essentials' packages built on Github actions (100% free compute) and
hosted on Cloudflare R2 (free egress, 10gb free storage, dirt cheap
beyond that). I've been using it for a while on 2 PCs, but only for
codecs and pipewire-aptx on Tumbelweed. It's not hard to expand to other
distros and full packman - that's still gonna cost below a cup of coffee
to host on R2. The page at https://packman.omnipackage.org is just
static html hosted in the same bucket with the packages and updated on
each build. Builds happen every night or manually triggered. Sources for
some packages taken from Factory, others persisted in the same bucket
with configuration that allows easy update from upstream.
Just asking: what do you guys think about this idea? Do you see
something like this as potential successor? Is bad idea in general maybe?
