FWIW, I just verified that this works with or without specifying an
explicit audio-backend. Without passing anything, Kodi uses Pipewire and
sound works; calling it via "kodi --audio-backend=pulseaudio", it uses
Pipewire's "pulseaudio" and sound works, too. Please give it a try!
