One idea is that your system had problems with policykit and/or
consolekit. Maybe this was fixed on openSUSE.
offtopic:
Does anyone know howto shutdown a box via xbmc when it was started
with plain X(init) (no displaymanager). My buttons in the exit menu are
here but don't work
I think this is also a problem with policykit or something.
