i'm using your MPlayer package:

and i'd like to suggest you several things. My cfg file looks like this:

> cat ~/.mplayer/config
# Write your default config options here!
nojoystick=yes
vo=vdpau
vc=ffh264vdpau,ffmpeg12vdpau,ffodivxvdpau,
ao=alsa

** So my suggestions are:
- put there (/etc/mplayer/mplayer.cfg) nojoystick=yes ## it took me some
time of investigating why shortcuts don't work
- put there at least ao=alsa,pulse, ## there is used by default oss ..
please note trailing ","
- put there at least by using same mechanism prefferd outputs (vo= and
vc=) "vo=vdpau,xv," makes a sense beacuse default is determined poorly
