The VideoLan repo is very offensive in updating there packages, they 
have RC2 and svn snapshot there.
I think we should wait until 1.0 is released, 0.9.9 works very well and 
is also the latest source tarball on 
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-sources.html

The other thing is, I'm not the maintainer and I hope Detlef is back 
until the new version is available, so he could do the work ;-)
