Both xine libs are 1.2.6-96-1-i586
With regard to having both versions of kaffeine functional, it is never a bad thing to have more than one tool in the box.
With the old version, if you have a recording active, all other channels except those on the current transponder are hidden on the channel list and the epg. I find this feature very useful.
The new version doesn't do this. Also with the new version, I could not record and watch different streams on the same transponder with the old version , I can.
Also the old version can have icons for each channel and the favorites buttons that run across the top. This makes it easy to ' sort the chaff from the oats' when you have 3 satellites and terrestrial channels in the list.
I have not had time to explore the new version of kaffeine fully yet to see what media works or not. It just about manages to play live HD stream from WDR on A19.2 but the limitation is more the about cpu and graphics card than the codecs. I am still using the Skystar 2 DVB card so no S2 capability at the moment.
I can't see why moving from kde3 to 4 required removal of the most basic but essential features.
At the moment, vlc is not still working(Qt4 lib problem) despite trying two versions and switching all system packages to packman. Although I don't use it much, it can sometimes play things that others can't and would be nice to have.

receivers.
Both receivers can be handled by one kaffeine with
recording two
different muxes (that could be up to 8 channels).
Interesting for me: what versions have your libs:
libxine2 and
libxine2-codecs and are the from packman?

Installed kaffeine worked ok
Plasma desktop failed a few days later and was unable to
login to the desktop
Created a new user and could login
Kaffeine did not work when logged in as new the user
Fixed corrupted desktop for first user by renaming the users
.kde4 folder
Logging in as first user kaffeine worked
Logging in as the second user kaffeine failed
Copied kaffeine configuration file from user 1 to user 2,
paying attention to permissions
Kaffeine now works for both users.
In fact, last night I managed to have both the old and new
versions of kaffeine running at the same time, one using the
DVB-T card and one using the DVB-S card.
Not sure what caused the problem to start with.

kaffeine-kde3 does not work any more with dvb. the reason
is the package libxine2. I mourn too
